New Educational Requirement

The Toronto Police Services Board is the employer of all Members of the Toronto Police Service, and in that capacity, is responsible for the recruitment, appointment and promotion of all Members, uniform and civilian. In addition, candidates for appointment as Police Officers must meet the conditions as prescribed in sections 43(1) and 45 of the Police Services Act and any other conditions as approved by the Board.

As part of the new policy, the following educational requirements are now in effect for the position of Cadet-in-Training:

Applicants are required to have:

  1. A university degree;
  2. A degree from a college of applied art and technology authorized to grant the degree;
  3. A diploma or advanced diploma granted by a college of applied arts and technology following successful completion of a program that is the equivalent in class hours or a full-time program of at least four academic semesters;
  4. A certificate or other document by a post-secondary institution evidencing successful completion of a program that the regulations prescribed as being equivalent to a degree of diploma described in subclause (i), (ii), or (iii); or
  5. If alternative criteria have been prescribed in the legislation and the candidate meets the alternative criteria, a secondary school diploma.

Vaccination Requirement

The Service is implementing a mandatory vaccination requirement to ensure workplace health safety for every member. All Toronto Police Service employees are required to be fully vaccinated (defined as completion of the full vaccination cycle with a COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada) as a condition of hire unless there is a valid exemption pursuant to the Human Rights Code.

Applicants do not need to disclose their vaccination status, however, when a candidate has been given a conditional offer of employment, they must be fully vaccinated in accordance with the above definition at the time of the offer.

Applicants who are invited to participate in the Shuttle Run test or the PREP test are asked to provide a Negative COVID-19 test result taken within a 48 hour window. Testing must be performed using either a rapid antigen test or an RT-PCR test. Candidates must not attend any police facility if they have tested positive for COVID-19 or answered YES to any of the COVID screening questions.
