Sex Crimes Unit
Investigative Section-Sexual Assault Squad

The investigative section of the Sex Crimes Unit is composed of 24 officers who are all trained, qualified specialists in this field. There is an equal mix of male and female officers, detectives and detective constables. All members are professional and sensitive to the needs of victims.

The majority of Sexual Assault investigations are conducted at the divisional level. The Sexual Assault Squad investigates stranger sexual assaults when it is determined there is an ongoing risk to the community and the investigation is beyond the resources available at the divisional level. Investigators are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2006, the unit investigated approximately 190 occurrences of this nature.

The successful investigation of sexual assault cases has been greatly enhanced by the strong relationships that exist between other agencies. Such groups include Victim Services, Woman’s College Hospital, Scarborough Hospital – Grace Campus, The hospital for Sick Children, Multilingual Community Interpreter Service (MCIS), the Centre for Forensic Sciences and over 140 other agencies, groups and hostels within the Toronto Police Service area.
