After being reported missing by relatives, on Tuesday August 31, 2004, officers attended the residence of Rosaura Tolentino Ramos, 26 years-of-age, at 2397 Finch Avenue West. She shared this apartment with her estranged husband, Juan Antonio Avalos (42 years-of-age at the time of this crime).
Officers discovered the body of Rosaura Ramos in a pool of blood in one of the bedrooms. An autopsy revealed that she was stabbed to death.
A review of the building’s security video, showed Avalos and Rosaura Ramos entering the property together during the evening of Sunday, August 29, 2004. He is seen leaving alone, carrying two suitcases and hand-baggage, during the early morning of Monday, August 30, 2004.
Juan Avalos has not been seen since.
A search of his banking records showed that he withdrew a significant quantity of money from an ATM during the morning of August 30, 2004, thereafter attempting to purchase an airline ticket for a United Airlines flight. Later, his vehicle was found at the rear of 2275 Weston Road, Toronto.
Investigation revealed that Avalos subsequently left Los Angeles, California on a flight bound for El Salvador. On Friday October 1, 2004, homicide investigators obtained a warrant for the arrest of Juan Antonio Avalos on a charge of 2nd-degree murder.
