The following are the circumstances surrounding the death of Giuseppe BONGIORNO and the injuries of another male.
Mr. BONGIORNO has been married for approximately thirty years and resided with his wife Maria BONGIORNO in North York for the past fifteen years. Their residence is a single level dwelling.
Mr. BONGIORNO was a retired construction worker.
In the early hours of Sunday, August 31st, 1997, the deceased and his wife were asleep in their bedroom. At about midnight another male resident of the household came home after work.
At approximately 3:00 a.m., the male arrived home.
At about 4:00 a.m. the male resident heard the apartment door being kicked open by a suspect. At this time the male began to struggle with a suspect. During the struggle, the male began to cry out for help. His parents awoke and came to the injured male aid. Giuseppe BONGIORNO also became involved in a physical confrontation with the suspect in the living room of the apartment.
A short time later, the male resident sustained a gun shot wound to his leg and fell onto the living-room floor. Giuseppe BONGIORNO continued to struggle with the suspect. The suspect then shot the deceased.
The suspect fled the scene.
Police, fire and ambulance personnel attended the apartment. Upon arrival, resuscitation efforts were commenced upon Giuseppe BONGIORNO but were unsuccessful. Giuseppe BONGIORNO was pronounced dead.
Investigations are continuing by members of the Homicide Squad.
