The following are the circumstances surrounding the murder of Gary Amory NEWMAN.
On Sunday, August 2nd, 1997 at approximately 4:24 a.m. the deceased in this matter was walking with some family and friends on the east side of Yonge Street just north of Gould Street.
At that time an extremely large crowd was occupying the Yonge Street area pertaining to the Carabana festivities that were ongoing throughout the weekend.
It was estimated that over one thousand persons were occupying the area of Yonge Street bounded by Elm Street to the north and Gould Street to the south.
At that time and for an unknown reason the suspect in this matter approached the deceased and placed a small calibre handgun to the deceased man’s head and fired.
The deceased immediately fell to the ground and was attended to by his friends and family members.
The suspect, in company with others fled southbound on Yonge Street and disappeared into the crowd.
Police officers from 52 Division were the first to arrive.
The deceased was transported to hospital and was seen in the emergency department.
At 4:45 a.m. the deceased was pronounced dead.
Detective James RAMER #4951 and Detective Gary GIROUX #2268 were contacted and they attended and took over the investigation.
Detectives from the Forensic Identification Unit attended and examined the scene.
The investigation into the murder of Gary NEWMAN is continuing.
