The deceased in this matter, Gracelyn GREENIDGE was a 41 year old nursing assistant who had worked at a Seniors’ Residence situated on Christie Street. She had been separated from her husband for the past 10 years and resided alone at 50 Driftwood Avenue, Apartment 506, since 1993.
She led an exemplary life and was respected by all who knew her.
On Monday, July 28, 1997, she worked her regular shift at her place of employment, namely 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, July 29, 1997, she called an acquaintance from her apartment to tell him that he had left his vehicle headlights on. Nothing appeared to be amiss.
On Tuesday, July 29, 1997, she failed to report for work at 3:00 p.m., and the staff at the seniors’ home became concerned as this was out of character for her.
At 6:00 p.m., a fellow worker left the home and went to the Driftwood Avenue address to check on the deceased. She arrived there at 6:30 p.m. and when she did not receive a response to a knock on the victim’s apartment door, she bent down and peered through the mail slot. To her horror she saw blood on some flyers that had been inserted through the slot.
She then peered more intently and saw the prostrate body of the deceased lying face down on the floor near the front door. She immediately went to the superintendent’s office and called 9-1-1.
Police Officers from 31 Division responded to the call and once at the scene secured a pass key from the superintendent and entered the locked apartment.
They found the deceased and it was quite apparent she had been the victim of a homicide.
