On Saturday, March 1st, 1997, at approximately 4:06 a.m., Police Officers from 13 Division responded to a number of 9-1-1 calls at an after hours club situated in the basement of 566 St. Clair Avenue West. Upon their arrival, they found the lifeless bodies of the 2 deceased sprawled on the floor of the club. Both had been shot to death.
An investigation was launched and it quickly became apparent that three other men had been wounded at the time of the shooting. They had been taken to nearby hospitals by cab, private automobile and ambulance, respectively.
From what homicide investigators have pieced together it appears two gunmen barged into the club when the doorman opened a locked door to allow two patrons to leave.
The deceased, Jerome SANDERS was the cashier/bartender at the establishment.
The other deceased Gershwin PFAFF was shot as he scrambled to exit via a rear door.
The three wounded men were hit during the stampede of people trying to leave after the shooting began.
At least two witnesses report that they saw a small sub-compact auto parked on Kenwood Avenue and they feel that the suspects left the scene in this vehicle.
The investigation is continuing.
