The following are the circumstances surrounding the death of Mauro TOMASSETTI.
On Wednesday October 4, 2000, at approximately 12:56 p.m. an Emergency 9-1-1 call was received, regarding the sound of gunshots in the area of Gihon Springs Drive at Kidron Valley Drive.
Uniform personnel from No. 23 Division attended the scene and were directed to an area behind the public swimming pool, where the victim was located. It was clear he had been shot.
Members of the Toronto Fire Service and Paramedics from the Toronto Emergency Medical Services attended. The victim was transported to the hospital where, despite medical intervention, he was declared dead at 2:04 p.m.
A Provincial Coroner attended the hospital, viewed the deceased and ordered a Post Mortem Examination.
Detective Larry HICKS (6744) and Detective Constable Frank OTTOWEL (5692) of Forensic Identification Services were notified and took charge of the scene.
Detectives Mark MENDELSON (2745) and Keith BRADSHAW (184) of the Homicide Squad were notified, attended and took charge of the investigation.
Investigations conducted by members of the Homicide Squad have revealed that the deceased was in the park, behind the swimming pool, in company with another male. An altercation took place, during which time the unidentified male brandished a handgun and shot the deceased several times. The suspect was last seen running from the park.
The investigation is continuing.
