The following are the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of: Sivamalar SANGARAPILLAI.
On Thursday, September 20, 2001 at approximately 10:01 p.m., the Toronto Police Communications Centre received a “911” telephone call from a male caller. The male caller stated that: his wife has been shot, by 2 males, in front of Highland Farms.
A suspect vehicle and licence plate had been obtained, as well as partial description of the two armed suspects which was immediately communicated to the attending emergency personnel.
A three-tiered emergency personnel response was commenced. Uniform officers from 41 Division was the first officer at the scene.
The scene was actually located in the parking lot of a strip plaza situated at 880 Ellesmere Road beside the Highland Farms store.
A female was located on the ground beside her own vehicle suffering from obvious trauma to her forehead.
The area was contained and secured by Uniform personnel of 41 Division under the direction of Sergeant GIBSON.
At approximately 10:12 p.m., the now deceased was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect vehicle, 1992 Honda Cle-4 door white, used in this incident, was located 3 blocks away from the original scene. The vehicle was located on Mondeo Drive, 3 hours after the shooting, and was seized for expert examinations.
The investigation to date has revealed that the deceased and her husband had just closed their store SAREE PALACE at 880 Ellesmere Road Unit 2. While walking to their van, the suspect vehicle arrived and the two unknown male suspects confronted them. The deceased was shot and the suspects fled in the stolen vehicle.
Investigations are continuing.
