The following are the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Shaun Peter MYERS.
On Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 0301 hrs. the Communications Bureau received a 9-1-1 call reporting unknown trouble and a person lying on the roadway in the area of Nugget Avenue. (Nugget Ave. travels east/west between McCowan Rd. and Markham Rd. just north of Sheppard Ave. E.)
Police from 42 Division arrived on scene at the same time.
The officers observed several vehicles leaving the area of 55 Nugget Avenue, the location of a dance club called the “Mirage Club”. The officers were directed to the front parking lot of #90 Nugget Avenue where they located the victim lying in a prone position suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He had no vital signs.
Police took charge of the scene and directed other 42 Division Units to block off the intersection of McCowan Rd. and Nugget Ave. along with traffic east and westbound Nugget Ave. east of the scene.
All vehicles leaving the area of the dance club were stopped and information was taken from the occupants.
Toronto Ambulance Service Paramedics attended the scene and examined the victim. He was pronounced dead on scene.
Forensic Identification Services were notified attended the scene and assumed responsibility for collecting evidence.
The Homicide Squad was contacted and Detective Terry WARK #7432 and Detective Rudy PASINI #4528 took charge of the investigation at the scene.
The investigation to date has revealed the following information and evidence.
The victim attended the “Mirage Club’ during the early morning hours of Saturday, March 3, 2001. Shortly before 0300 hrs., the victim left the club and was purchasing jerk chicken from a vendor in the parking lot west of the club entrance.
The victim was approached from behind by 3-5 males who started to struggle with him. The victim was able to slip out of his jacket and run eastbound Nugget Ave. Two (2) gunshots were heard at this time.
He was chased east on Nugget Ave. Men carrying a handgun took shots at the victim. The victim then fell to the ground in the parking lot of #90 Nugget Ave.
The suspect then crossed Nugget Ave. and got into a vehicle that had stopped to pick him up. The vehicle travelled eastbound Nugget Ave. The vehicle was described as an older model white Ford Tempo, 4 door, tinted windows.
Approximately 180 – 200 patron’s names were obtained by uniform personnel leaving the “Mirage Club”.
The investigation is continuing.
