The following are the circumstances surrounding the death of Suzette AUGUSTIN and the murder of Paulson Veried CHELLAKUDAM:
On Friday February 20th 2004 at approximately 5:15 p.m., the first deceased in this matter, Suzette AUGUSTIN was with her boyfriend in a plaza situated at 1593 Wilson Avenue, Toronto. The parking lot was full causing the operator of the vehicle to drop AUGUSTIN off near a business premises known as Travel Media. AUGUSTIN’S friend requested that she walk down a small cement pathway to the travel agency that was located approximately thirty metres from the parking lot edge to drop off a document for the owner of the agency. The deceased woman’s boyfriend waited for ten to fifteen minutes and began to question why she had not returned to the car.
At approximately 5:33 p.m., the deceased’s boyfriend left his car and walked to the Travel Media to investigate. He was met by a witness who advised that two people had been stabbed.
The witness advised that she had entered the business premises a short time prior emergency services being contacted and found that the male victim CHELLAKUDAM inside the office with the deceased. CHELLAKUDAM stood up and walked out of the business where he collapsed on the cement walkway.
Police from 31 Division were the first Officers at the scene. The witness apprised other Constables that a female subject was inside the business premises suffering from stab wounds and that a male subject was outside of the business also suffering from stab wounds.
Toronto Fire and Ambulance attended and commenced life saving efforts. An “emergency run” was initiated for the transportation of the victims to a local hospital.
The deceased woman, AUGUSTIN underwent emergency surgery. She succumbed to her injuries while in the operating room.
The injured man, CHELLAKUDAM underwent emergency surgery and also succumed to his injuries.
It was learned that the deceased was resident of Saint Lucia and had arrived in Canada to visit her boyfriend on February 4th 2004. She was scheduled to depart Toronto for Cuba to continue her educational endeavours on February 22nd, 2004.
A family member attended Toronto during the week of February 23rd, 2004. The Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Kenny ANTHONY has contacted the family of the deceased to offer his condolences.
A post mortem examination was conducted on Saturday February 21st, 2004 at the Centre of Forensic Sciences. The cause of death was found to be from multiple stab wounds to the chest and abdomen of AUGUSTIN.
A media appeal was conducted by Detective Sergeant GIROUX on Saturday February 21st, 2004 in an effort to stimulate public awareness in the investigation.
The investigation is continuing.
