On Monday July 27th, 1998, at approximately 5:37 p.m., Communications Bureau received a 9-1-1 Emergency call to attend 320 George Street for a male being assaulted by several males. The victim was reported to be bleeding from the face. He was identified as John Austin.
Police from 51 Division responded to the radio call. The officers attended the scene, and were advised that the victim had been transported by ambulance to Hospital. The officers attended the hospital and were advised that Mr. Austin was in serious condition. Police stayed at the hospital with the victim, while other officers returned to the scene to secure the area and locate witnesses.
Investigations have revealed that the victim was involved in a dispute on the street with three males. The victim was stuck on the head with a rock and then kicked. The assailants then fled the area.
The victim required surgery to repair a ruptured spleen. A second operation was performed on Wednesday July 29th.
The victim was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 29th, 1998.
The deceased had been staying at Seaton House for the past two weeks.
