“Toronto Police Chief William Blair believes that the Toronto Police Service must continue to work closely with their community partners to ensure that victims of domestic violence and their children get the help and support they need to leave abusive relationships and rebuild their lives.

In keeping with this mandate, the Service has made “Focusing on Violence Against Women" a Service priority for 2009-2011” Sgt. Deb Vittie, the Toronto Police Service Domestic Violence Coordinator attached to the Community Mobilization Unit advises, “We ask victims of domestic violence and their children to make huge life changes at a time when they are least able to. Victims need support and referrals to other community assistance providers to help them do this. Accordingly, we have updated our resource pamphlet for domestic violence victims."

Partnering with Crimestoppers

Living with domestic violence can cause physical and emotional harm to children and youth. The domestic violence section of the Community Mobilization Unit has worked closely with Seneca College Graphic Art Design students to produce posters that were adopted by Crimestoppers to help children who witness domestic violence in their homes. The message was, “If you know or suspect a child is living with domestic violence, make the anonymous call to Crimestoppers.”
