Recruiting Team
The mandate of the Employment Unit is to contribute to the achievement of the Toronto Police Service's (TPS) mission, goals, and objectives by:
• providing an effective, efficient and economical support service
• facilitate the hiring needs of the Service by recruiting and selecting the best candidates that are reflective of the community
• ensuring that all employment processes are inclusive, transparent, fair and equitable.
We work in partnership with our communities ensuring that the Service reflects and represents the diversity of the people we serve. All Service members, both civilian and uniform, play a role in engaging with our citizens in all of our neighbourhoods and actively promoting the Service as an 'Employer of Choice'.
To assist the Unit in achieving its mandate, the Recruiting Section deals with a number of strategies which are designed to attract the most qualified candidates who represent and reflect our community. These initiatives include, but are not limited too:
Community/Cultural Events: Recruiters attend job fairs, community events, educational institutions, youth fairs and other venues to actively seek potential candidates in diverse communities. Targeted recruiting helps the TPS hire candidates who meet the Service's organizational needs. Attending these events helps build positive community-police relationships. The TPS participates in various general community and cultural events such as: Gay Pride Parade, National Women's Show, Aboriginal Pow Wow, Association of Black Law Enforcement Gala, Caribana Parade, Harry Jerome Awards Gala, Ontario Organization of South Asian Police Officers Gala, Asian Heritage Month Celebrations, National Aboriginal Day Ceremony, Planet Africa Expo and many more events that occur in many of our diverse communities and beyond.
Media Strategy: The Employment Unit utilizes various media platforms to advertise career opportunities. Advertisement is done through mainstream and diverse media platforms such as: print, radio, television and the Service's website. Some examples of these are: Toronto Star, National Post, Workopolis, Anishnawabe News (Aboriginal), Sing Tao Newspaper (Chinese), Uthayan Newspaper (Tamil), Proud FM (L.G.B.T.) and the Rogers Television media group. The Unit has significantly increased and sought out recruiting advertisements in these media platforms, particularly local diverse community papers.
Social Media: The Recruiting Section has provided current and relevant information on both Facebook and Twitter. The section has also posted its Recruiting Video on the Service's YouTube page.
Mentoring Sessions: The Recruiting Section conducts regular general mentoring sessions on a weekly basis to increase potential candidate awareness of the employment opportunities available, job requirements and qualifications and the selection criteria for the position of police recruit. This is achieved through the following initiatives:
General Information Sessions are offered by the Employment Unit on the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Constable Selection Process and includes the following:
• Police Analytical Thinking Inventory (PATI) and Written Communications Test (WCT) sessions are hosted by the Employment Unit. These tests are a series of written preliminary components where the applicant has a chance to practice example questions. Once completed, recruiters give applicants advice and tips on how to improve their score.
• Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) more specifically the Pursuit/Restraint Component of the PREP test. The Toronto Police Service offers practice sessions on the fitness test where applicants and potential applicants have an opportunity to try components of the Pursuit/Restraint Circuit and Shuttle Run. Participants also receive specific instructions on how to physically prepare for the PREP test. These sessions have proven to be invaluable for applicants as many have stated that they would not have been successful if it had not been for the PREP practice sessions offered by the TPS.
After each General Information Session, interested participants are assigned a recruiter who will guide them through the hiring process.
